Tribute To Nikola Tesla
Nikola Tesla Serbian Cyrillic Никола Тесла; 10 July 1856 -- 7 January 1943 was an inventor, mechanical engineer, and electrical engineer. He was an important contributor to the birth of commercial electricity, and is best known for his many revolutionary developments in the field of electromagnetism in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Teslas patents and theoretical work formed the basis of modern alternating current AC electric power systems, including the polyphase system of electrical distribution and the AC motor. This work helped usher in the Second Industrial Revolution. Born an ethnic Serb in th e village of Smiljan now part of Gospić, in the Croatian Military Frontier of the Austrian Empire modern-day Croatia, Tesla was a subject of the Austrian Empire by birth and later became an American citizen. Because of his 1894 demonstration of wireless communication through radio[citation need ed] and as the eventual victor in the War of Currents, he was widely respected as one of the greatest electrical engineers who worked in America. He pioneered modern electrical engineering and many of his discoveries were of groundbreaking importance. In the United States during this time, Teslas fame rivaled that of any other inventor or scientist in history or popular culture. Nikola Tesla demonstrated wireless energy transfer to power electronic devices as early as 1893, and aspired to intercontinental...

Connectsafe Wireless Vehicle Communication System - University of South Australia
Dedicated short range communications combines high reliability wireless communications and GPS, allowing cars to talk to each other and to roadside infrastructure such as traffic lights. This gives cars a three hundred and sixty degree awareness of nearby vehicles, even in situations where the driver cannot see them. Using vehicle position and speed information received from nearby cars, an onboard computer can warn the driver of hazardous situations, such as a vehicle running a red light or failing to give way. This helps avoid intersection collisions which are responsible for sixty percent of multi-vehicle crashes. The technology can also help prevent level crossing accidents. The system can alert drivers of a car braking ahead, even when the drivers vision is blocked by other cars or trucks. The system can also alert drivers to approaching emergency vehicles. Infrastructure to vehicle communications can warn drivers of roadworks and temporary reduced speed limits, for example in school zones. Real-time notification of roadworks, breakdowns and congestion help drivers to select alternate routes. ConnectSafe Adelaide is Australias first field trial and on-road demonstration of dedicated short range communications for cooperative safety and traffic management.

AT & T Archives Lightwave
See more from the AT & T Archives at techchannel.att.com Lightwave opens with a dramatization of Alexander Graham Bells photophone test, which transmitted his voice via reflected sunlight beams - all the way back in 1880. The film then explores the technological developments over the years which led to lightwave communications trials in the 1970s. The film ends with a look into the future at the possible telecommunications benefits of this then-emerging technology. The Photophone was invented by Alexander Graham Bell and his then-assistant Charles Sumner Tainter in 1880. The photophone sent a conversation between two points 700 ft. apart, and the device transmitted both sounds and speech. It was, essentially, the very first wireless call. Bell was so taken with this invention that he referred to it as his greatest achievement - so much so that he wanted to name his second daughter Photophone. His wife, Mabel, objected, so the daughter became Marian Daisy Bell later to be paid tribute by the first piece of computer music developed at Bell Labs, a version of the song Daisy Bell. By 1977, fiber optic communication was still pre-natal - AT & Ts first fiber-optic route was placed from Cambridge, MA, to Washington DC, and was placed in service around 1983-84. In 2011, modern wireless light systems are actually still in the experimental/growth stage. While fiber-optic technology is extremely prevalent, those still include w...
