RI Christmas Lectures 2010 - Velcro and Headlice
Lecture 2 - Why Chocolate Melts and Jet Engines Dont Why is there an inflatable velcro wall in the Royal Institution and what does a head louse really look like? This demonstration made quite a few people at the RI very nervous, note the proximity of the giant Velcro wall to the priceless paintings and chandeliers that live in that room. To make things a little more difficult we put a scanning electron microscope worth tens of thousands right next to it. But it did mean that, in one room, you could see what happens to Velcro on big scale and on a very small scale -- surely a world first?

RI Christmas Lectures 2010 - Iron and Fireworks
Lecture 2 - Why Chocolate Melts and Jet Engines Dont Why does an iron rod just heat up in a bunsen burner flame whilst iron filling produce fireworks? We got in a pyrotechnics specialist for this one. It was definitely the biggest Bunsen burner anyone at the RI had ever seen. The iron powder that we used is more often found in fireworks, for obvious reasons.

GE Aviation to Build Dayton Research Center
GE Aviation will locate a 51 million research center in the Ohio Aerospace Hub on the University of Dayton campus. The 115000-sq.-ft. Electrical Power Integrated Systems Research and Development Center EPISCENTER will be built on River Park Drive near the intersection of Patterson Boulevard and Stewart Street. The Center will be operational by late 2012 and will work cooperatively with the University of Dayton Research Institute to develop and deploy advanced electric power systems for aviation and aerospace applications. The GE EPISCENTER is part of the regions Aerospace Hub of Innovation designed to attract and support advanced technology companies. The GE project is enabled by an Ohio Third Frontier capital grant of up to 7.6 million. GE Aviation, an operating unit of GE, is a leading provider of jet engines, components and integrated systems for commercial and military aircraft.

RAF Harrier Air Display
RAF Harrier, Vertical/Short Take-off and Landing V/STOL ground attack aircraft display. This video is a composite of two spectacular displays by a Royal Air Force Harrier jump jet. The display pilots show the unique ability of the Harrier to hover and manoeuvre slowly in flight as well being an agile fast jet at low level. This ability is achieved with the Rolls-Royce Pegasus vectored-thrust turbofan engines, with four rotatable jet nozzles, that were designed and developed for the Harrier. The displays in the video were at Kemble and Shoreham.

How Can We Travel Faster In Space?
education.jsc.nasa.gov Subject Matter Expert Joseph Trevathan, Dan Woodard, and Victoria Friedensen Since early times, people have looked into space and wondered about its mysteries. The vastness of space has opened our minds, but its size has limited our search. We want to explore distant worlds, but how can we travel faster so we can go farther into space? Jet speed certainly isnt the answer. Imagine traveling by jet to the moon from Earth, about 386000 km 240000 miles. A jet traveling at 1600 km/h 1000 mph would take about 240 hours or about 40 days to reach the moon. Scientists and engineers clearly knew from the start that the only way to get into space is to use rockets and rocket propulsion. The vehicles and propulsion systems developed for the Apollo program were designed to reach the moon. Using a chemical propulsion system, it took the Apollo astronauts about 2.5 days to get to the moon, traveling at speeds faster than 39000 km/h more than 24000 mph. The space shuttle uses a chemical propulsion system based upon both liquid and solid propellants. It combines the features of a rocket, aircraft, and glider and is designed to carry astronauts, satellites, and other cargo into Earths orbit. Traveling at approximately 29000 km/h 18000 mph the shuttle orbits Earth every 90 minutes. By using current technology and a spacecraft powered by chemical rocket engines, a trip to Mars could take between six to nine months....
