From molecules to cells towards translational bioinformatics
Dr. Xavier de la Cruz. ICREA Research Professor IBMB-CSIC, Barcelona The growing amount of molecular-level information whole genomes, SNPs, protein structures, functional data, etc constitutes both an impressive opportunity and an important challenge for the development of biomedical research. In my talk I will show how simple bioinformatics tools can be used to harness all this information and provide a useful view on two problems the prediction of pathological mutations and the role of alternative splicing in health and disease. In the first case I will describe how methods for scoring SNPs are becoming an increasingly accurate tool; I will also describe some of its limitations and how they can be overcomed by the collaboration between experimental and bioinformatics researchers. In the case of alternative splicing I will describe how we are using new computational tools to obtain a cell-level view of the damaging impact of aberrant isoforms.

TEDxLosGatos - Andrew Hessel - Even evolution evolves
Andrew Hessel, Genomic Scientist Andrew Hessel is the Co-Chair of biotechnology and bioinformatics at Singularity University, an educational institution created to train leaders in exponential fast-changing technologies. He views living cells as powerful information processors that are programmable with genetic engineering. His personal focus is synthetic biology, a suite of tools that allow genomes to be manipulated with relative ease. Andrew is also the co-founder and managing director of the Pink Army Cooperative, a social biotechnology company working to create open source personalized breast cancer treatments. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* *Subject to certain rules and regulations
