Freedom School - Black Power at Villanova? The Rediscovery of the Black Student Movement
Freedom School 2012 230pm - Bryn Mawr Room, Villanova University Tom Mogan In the most recent written history of Villanova University, the author writes on a campus where the number of African American students was negligible, the civil rights movement had little personal relevance. Really??? A quick glance at the Villanovan during this time period shows the emergence of an all- ‐black student organization, the publication of the Black Power-‐inspired Black Wildcat, demonstrations led by black students and much more The presenter of this session has embarked on an oral history project which seeks to correct this historical narrative by providing a platform for those wh ose history has yet to be written. This session will provide a fascinating look at the unwritten history of black students at Villanova during these tumultuous times and the efforts to capture this history.

Superfly - Curtis Mayfield 1972
Superfly was a song by American soul and funk musician Curtis Mayfield, the title track from his 1972 soundtrack album for the film, Super Fly. It was the second single released from the album, and reached 8 on the Billboard Pop chart and 5 on the R & B chart. The songs lyrics celebrate the craftiness and determination of the films main character, and plays over the films closing credits. Super Fly was a 1972 Blaxploitation movie directed by Gordon Parks, Jr., starring Ron ONeal as Youngblood Priest, a black cocaine dealer who is trying to quit the underworld drug business. Super Fly has the dubious distinction of being one of the few films ever to have been out-grossed by its soundtrack. The bassline and the rototom percussion break from the songs introduction performed by Joseph Lucky Scott and Master Henry Gibson, respectively have repeatedly been sampled in songs by many artists, including Beastie Boys, The Notorious BIG, and Nelly. Mayfield himself sampled the original song in Superfly 1990, a duet he recorded with rapper Ice-T. Super Fly was the third studio album by Mayfield, released in July 1972 on Curtom Records. Widely considered a classic of 1970s soul and funk music, the album was a nearly-immediate hit. Super Fly, along with Marvin Gayes 1971 release Whats Going On, was one of the pioneering soul concept albums, with its then-unique socially-aware lyrics about poverty and drug abuse...

Jail No Bail Program Trailer
To purchase a copy of this program, visit the ETV store bit.ly On January 31, 1961, ten black students from Friendship College walked into McCrorys Five and Dime in downtown Rock Hill, SC. They sat down at the lunch counter and ordered hamburgers and soft drinks. They were denied service and told to leave. When they refused, the group was arrested and charged with trespassing. In previous sit-ins across the South, protestors were arrested, processed by the police, fined and then released, creating a dubious revenue stream from which many municipalities easily profited. But when the Friendship students went before the judge, they chose to serve their time behind bars. For the first time, not only did the city not collect its 100 per person, it actually had to pay to house and feed the men. After four days of incarceration, one student did pay his fine and was released. However, the remaining students, known as the Friendship Nine, completed their 30 days of hard labor. Word of their action spread like wildfire, receiving national media attention, including the New York Times. The Jail, No Bail strategy became the new tactic that helped galvanize the civil rights protest movement. Narrated by award-winning actor Keith David, Jail, No Bail is a powerful examination of the personal trials and adversities that tested the character and resolve of this group of young men. Through non-violent protest, these strong-willed activ...
