Trafalgar Square Anti-cuts occupation in defence of peaceful protest
occupytrafalgarsquare.wordpress.com Statement from Protestors; Following the successful occupations of Trafalgar Square on the 2nd and 9th of April another occupation from Saturday 16th April 18.30 for 24 hours. This will almost definitely continue on a weekly basis to show our continued opposition and resistance to the coalition governments program of cuts, and provide a space to engage with the public and discuss alternatives to cutting public services. In occupying Trafalgar Square repeatedly so soon after the half-a-million strong march on the 26th of March and Vince Cables refusal to change its fundamental economic policy simply in response to a demonstration of that kind. we intend to show that we will not go back home until the government realises that popular opinion is against its program of cuts and changes its policies. After the violent eviction of peaceful protesters on March 26th we intend to show that without police presence protesters can organise themselves peacefully and lawfully. We showed this on the 2nd and 9th of April when the police stayed at a distance for the entire occupation and there was no conflict or illegal activity. Police intervention at protests only serves to antagonise and incite violence. This occupation intends to defend our right to peaceful protest. defendtherighttoprotest.org

The Overspent American Why We Want What We Dont Need
www.mediaed.org In this powerful new video, Juliet Schor scrutinizes what she calls the new consumerism--a national phenomenon of upscale spending that is shaped and reinforced by a commercially-driven media system. She argues that keeping up with the Joneses is no longer enough for middle and upper-middle class Americans, many of whom become burdened with debilitating debt as they seek to emulate materialistic TV lifestyles. Drawing on her academic research, Schor explains the cultural forces that cause Americans to work longer hours and spend more than they can afford in order to participate in a consumption competition with others. The video illustrates with numerous examples how more and more products are being used as social communicators to demonstrate material success. The Overspent American challenges the inevitability of the consumer lifestyle by proposing alternatives to the work and spend cycle that has so many Americans feeling trapped and unfulfilled. The video draws attention to--and ultimately raises serious questions about--the costs both financial and societal of relentlessly searching for happiness and identity through consumption.

Deadly Persuasion The Advertising of Alcohol & Tobacco
www.mediaed.org In Deadly Persuasion The Advertising of Alcohol & Tobacco, Jean Kilbourne exposes the manipulative marketing strategies and tactics used by the tobacco and alcohol industries to keep Americans hooked on their dangerous products. Illustrating her analysis with hundreds of current advertising examples from mainstream and trade sources, Kilbourne presents a compelling argument that these cynical industries have a clear and deep understanding of the psychology of addiction an understanding they exploit to create and feed a life-threatening dependency on their products. Deadly Persuasion casts a critical eye on the corporate interests that lie behind the industries whose products kill more than 450000 Americans each year.

Meat Industry World Issues Assignment
More than 1/3 of the worlds grain is used to feed livestock. In North America alone, 70-80% of the produced grain is used to feed cattle. With all the production in making meat products, the price for this food should be much higher than it is to be considered realistic. If you just considered the cost of the water being used alone, a more practical cost for one pound of hamburger meat would be 35 This is also an environmental issue considering the over-consumption of water, and the decreasing amount of it on our planet. Water wastage is just one of the environmental issues surrounding the ever-growing meat industry. There is also top soil loss, animal cruelty, rainforest damage and loss, greenhouse gas emissions, and massive pollution to worry about, and those problems are only a dent in the environmental issues portion of this terrible business. The growing Obesity rates, and the huge inflation of fast food companies in our communities is making our culture transform at an alarming rate. What have our countries become when the unhealthy are cheaper than the healthy foods? The political issues that engulf the meat industry are limitless also. We, as a collective society chose how to live, politics use consumer choices as a plus to their arguments, and it makes it easier to point their finger at the individual consumers. But what is a person to do, when our society is changing into one that fast food is their only option? Th...

We Shop, Who Pays? part 1/3
Full playlist www.youtube.com A 2003 documentary about Western companies producing clothes and shoes in developing countries. It is a film about the problems with very low wages, child labor and environmental pollution, and about what can be done to solve these problems. We visit factories in India and talk to suppliers, laborers, NGOs, and farmers who give their point of view. Do western companies take any responsibility? Leaders for H & M and other big Swedish companies answer the question. We Shop - Who Pays? has been produced by the Swedish Fair Trade Centre. The film spotlights Swedish fashion companies, H & M in particular, but the practices shown in the film are common throughout the fashion industry. This film focuses on Tirupur in South India but unlike other resources so far available, it features the regions shoe industry as well as going back up the production chain to examine the impact of dyeing processes on the local environment. It tells of chemicals used which are banned in Europe, of child laborers who do not drink water during the day because there are not enough toilets for their use. Of 16 to 19 years old who sleep on site so they can work two shifts a day. Of the water which has to be brought in every day as the local water sources are unfit for human consumption, and of land contaminated by the dyeing industry for which farmers have not been compensated. Language of original/Subtitles Swedish and I...

Arms Traders Exposed
