Jubilant Russian scientists are carrying home 40 liters of relic water, which waited for them, unblemished, in the Antarctic, long before the man first trod the Earth. Lake Vostok's treasury is ready to reveal its millions-year-old secrets. Forget the world's economic crisis and civil war in Syria: the severe, majestic Antarctic is opening up its eternal fridge to the mankind. Scientists at Vostok Antarctic research station -- drilling towards the largest freshwater tank, corked for 20 million years in eastern Antarctica -- secured several dozen liters of prehistoric water. Drilling through over 3700 meters of quality ice is no fun, especially if you do not want to contaminate anything lying underneath. The international community has been grinding into the glacier for 30 years. Rival Western expeditions have been using the hot-water drilling method -- boiling the ice -- which is slower but cleaner. On February 4, it seemed to finally give way, when the drilling machine plunged into water! The ice taken to the surface by the drill was glazed in a way only water could do. The machine also brought back 40 liters of water -- frozen, naturally, given the temperature in the crack never goes higher than -55 Centigrade and all the 3766 meters it had to travel up. "It's not right, it's not working, and I'm really frustrated about that," says Clark. Courts are full and wait times are long and growing. Lawyers say in some cases criminals are being released without punishment. Victoria lawyer Geofrey Simair says the system needs more funding: "there has been a lack of sheriffs, a lack of court staff, a lack of judges, and a whole bunch of problems when it comes to funding the system". The NDP criticized the Liberals for its lack of action calling today's announcement nothing more than a study. NDP Critic Leonard Krog called the review an attempt to win back public support. "I think that's what this announcement is about and other announcements have been about," he says. "It's about trying to boost a government's image that's way past its best before date". Prominent lawyer Geoffrey Cowper will chair the review that will address wait times and backlogs by reaching out to independent judiciary, crown counsel, lawyers and police. Athens will have to find a way to build more *affordable* houses -- with *less* money. Newsource Reporter Eric Jones says federal budget cuts are literally hitting close to home. The city may not be able to provide as much quality housing to the people who need it the most. Some big changes to affordable housing in Athens are on its way after Congress slashed federal funding for HOME -- a program which provides grants to build low income housing. Heather Benham is the Housing Director at the Land Trust in Athens. Benham says the nonprofit organization won't be able to provide as many homes as before, and that these cuts don't come at the best possible time. The Athens Clarke Human and Economic Development Department receives these HOME grants and distributes them to local nonprofits. The decision to cut federal funding means agencies like HED won't be able to do multiple projects at a time. But Community Economic Development Coordinator Teri Evans says they do have a safety net. The Athens Banner Herald is reporting that the big cuts follow a Washington Post investigation that revealed almost fifteen percent of the country's construction projects were either delayed or incomplete.
