JOSEPH, Ore -- Early morning on January 14, 11 ½ miles outside of Joseph where the wind is blowing hard and cold on what is called "Divide", another probable wolf predation investigation is happening yet again on private property. Wolf supporters have said in the past, that wolves would rather feed on their natural prey such as elk and deer, then going after livestock, companion animals and pets. There are an estimated 2000 head of elk just over a butte from here. So far the Imnaha pack has killed 21 cows and calves according to ODFW, US Wildlife Services reports 30. But this time, the Imnaha pack did not chase down another cow or calf; they killed one of Steen Wilderness Adventures' mules, owned by Shawn and Shelly Steen. The mule's name was Annie, Shawn Steen said. "When I saw her even with what little was left of her body I knew exactly who it was." Steen runs about 40 head of mules and horses on the Divide and can call every single one by name. "They are companion animals, and not just mules and horses," he said. Annie was a healthy 15 year old mule. She was a riding and pack mule carrying many Adventurers from the Willamette Valley and other places into the pristine Wilderness of Wallowa County during summer and fall. "She was a very nice mule, safe and sound to ride and pack for all of our customers we host through the year", Steen said. Residents took to social media sites like Youtube and Twitter to document the violence surrounding their homes and Tuesday's gunfight was no exception. But what was out of the ordinary was news of gunmen storming a circus in Matamoros and taking off with a caged white Bengal tiger. Whether it happened or not, is unclear at this time, but there are several instances of cartel members keeping exotic animals as pets. "We brought them here the two lions," Jerry Stones said. "We had a male and a female... We named them Mario and Juanita from marijuana, as in the marijuana drug bust." Stones takes care of the animals at Brownsville's Gladys Porter Zoo. He said Juanita, the 12-year-old female lion, arrived at the zoo about ten years ago. "They busted a drug dealer up by Indian Lake and when they busted him he had a bunch of marijuana in a Winnebago," he said. "And right next to the Winnebago was this cage with two lions in it." Stones has been with the zoo for 41 years, in that time he says he has seen it all. He said he also knows it is not just the cartels taking on wild animals as pets, but ordinary people also buy them until they realize taking care of them requires more than they can handle. An emu and a ewe are not your usual domestic pets. But, for Mary Dewsnup and her partner Willard Bedford, they were pets and family members. An emu is a large, exotic bird, very similar to the ostrich. A ewe is a female sheep. Though they were two very different animals, Mary said they bonded and were inseparable. "Where you saw one, you saw the other," she said. Dewsnup said that the emu was hatched right there in their backyard, nearly 10 years ago. But Dewsnup's happiness and joy for her pets came to end last Sunday, when she said they were brutally killed. She said they were mauled and attacked by her neighbor's two pit bull dogs.

My neighbour is a pathetic pet owner who has never properly socialized this poor female dog. She barks and lunges at me, strangers and my animals. This dogs owner had the nerve to call New Westminster Animal Control and lodged complaints about my rooster ! I have tried my best with this disturbed neighbour, as I am the one who bares the brunt of his dogs vicious behaviour. I am the one who filled the holes from his dog digging under my fence (adjacent to a city laneway - land he does not own) trying to get into my property. I am the one who had to put blocks and bricks at the base of my fence while the owner made no effort to change the animals behaviour. This continued to the point that I agreed to remove a section of my fence and installed wire mesh (at my time and expense no less) so the dog could see what was going on in an attempt to pacify her curiosity. I have never complained to authorities about my neighbours aggressive dogs barking and lunging at me, guests and my animals while in my own backyard. There have even been occasions when this dog - while unattended and loose - has aggressively approached pedestrians walking down our street, and has even comes onto my driveway in my front yard to bark and lunge at me or a visitors. Sadly, I know it's not the dogs fault that it behaves in such a way. Some animal owners are cowards who take comfort in having an aggressive barking dog to protect them.
