SMRT found 21 claws dislodged along rail system 18-Dec-2011
Commuters can expect trains along the North-South and East West Lines to run slower and with longer intervals as the Land Transport Authority LTA has ordered train operator SMRT to place a temporary speed restriction of 40 kilometres per hour at certain stretches. This comes after overnight investigations found 21 claws dislodged along the rail system, which may have disrupted power to the trains. The inspection was due to have been completed by Sunday morning, but it stretched on as engineers needed more time to correct the missing claws. Spaced at 6.3 metres apart, the claws are usually covered and had to be manually inspected. At a media conference on Sunday afternoon, Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew said this will add five minutes to an end-to-end journey, which normally takes 60 minutes. Mr Lui said When we first did the planning to close the trains until 10am, the assessment was that there was sufficient time to do the visual checks. As a result of some of these discoveries, we felt there was a need to go deeper into it and also to do some of these gauge measurements, to do some of the rectifications and as they took me through all that they did, its actually quite a laborious process. Mr Lui said Out of the fleet of 120 over trains, 13 will have to be withdrawn from service. And, we will need to make sure that we replace collector shoes and do those repairs and rectifications. So obviously this will have som...

EW Line resumes service; NS Line operating partially 18-Dec-2011
SMRT said train services on the East-West Line resumed at 11.00 am on Sunday while services on the North-South Line are operating partially. On the North-South Line, services between Jurong East and Ang Mo Kio station resumed at 11.09 am, while those north-bound between Raffles Place and Jurong East resumed at 11.25 am. Services south-bound between Ang Mo Kio and Marina Bay stations will resume at about noon. Train services on both lines were scheduled to resume at 10.00 am on Sunday, but these were delayed as SMRT and the Land Transport Authority needed more time to conduct a full inspection of the tracks and trains. SMRT said that when services do resume, commuters at a few stations which are further from the depots may have to wait for up to 45 minutes for the trains to arrive. Passengers can take the MRT shuttle bus which will be extended until further notice. SMRT has apologised for the inconvenience caused. The morning shutdown follows Saturdays seven-hour breakdown on the North-South Line caused by problems with the power rail system. It was the third service disruption this week - with the first hitting the Circle Line during morning peak hours on Wednesday and the second on Thursday night on the North-South Line, causing commuter chaos. www.channelnewsasia.com Video/Channel NewsAsia

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong Public inquiry to look into MRT disruptions
Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has ordered a public inquiry, after trains on the North-South Line broke down on Saturday morning - the third MRT disruption in four days. Speaking to reporters on Saturday afternoon, Mr Lee said the committee of inquiry will be similar to that formed after the Nicoll Highway collapse in 20 April 2004. More immediately, a thorough check of the rail system will begin on Saturday, after the train services end. Train services on the North-South and East-West Lines will be delayed on Sunday, and will begin only at 10am, after checks are complete. The consecutive breakdowns concerned the prime minister so much that he has cut short his vacation to attend to the matter. Mr Lee said It will be a public inquiry, the evidence will be presented to understand why these incidents happened, what is at the bottom of it and how we can make the system more robust and reliable and fault tolerant. So that even when a problem happens, you can isolate it quickly and you can still operate the system in a safe way. Mr Lee expects the Committee to be formed within the next few weeks. The committee of inquiry will be assembled by the Transport Minister and will make their conclusions public. There are no details of the committee yet, but Mr Lee said it will comprise some members of the independent team of experts being tasked by Mr Lui Tuck Yew to look into Thursdays incident. He said the disruptions are unfortuna...

Exec Vice President Trains explains SMRT breakdown
SMRT CEO Saw Phaik Hwa on Friday offered her sincere apologies to all commuters affected in Thursday nights five-hour MRT network breakdown on the north-south line. Speaking at a news conference Friday afternoon at the SMRT Headquarters, Ms Saw promised a full investigation into what caused the breakdown. She said SMRT will learn from the incident and improve on giving better information. We do apologise especially those who experienced considerable inconvenience... What we can promise is that we will spare no effort in preventing such an occurrence, said Ms Saw. I will personally look into improving our incident management plan, especially in the areas of giving timely and better information, as well as crowd management, in both our stations and in the trains, she added. SMRT cited a possible alignment problem in the rail system as the cause of the disruption, and deployed some 60 staff to test for alignment on Thursday night after the incident. However, the exact point at which the alignment was off has not been established yet. The disruption affected 127000 passengers, and some 1000 commuters were also trapped in each of the four trains that stalled. More than 300 staff who were not working at that time were activated to help commuters. SMRT acknowledged that the rail network has grown, and hence is more complex. It said this made it difficult for the operator to execute its emergency plans. SMRT said it will review i...

SMRTs northbound train service between Marina Bay & Bishan resumed
Train services on the northbound North-South MRT Line - between Marina Bay and Bishan stations - resumed at 11.40pm on Thursday. Train operator SMRT says the disruption was caused by a damaged third rail between Dhoby Ghaut and City Hall MRT stations. The faulty third rail damaged the collector shoes of four trains, causing them to stall - one train at Braddell station, one before Orchard station and two trains at Dhoby Ghaut station. SMRT says engineers immediately went onsite to attend to the fault and repaired the third rail by 9.50pm. Thereafter, they conducted a full inspection of it. SMRT says one train was stopped between Dhoby Ghaut and City Hall stations. As such, passengers had to get off and walk on the track to exit at Dhoby Ghaut. Traction power was switched off to facilitate this detrainment and its investigation. After power to affected trains was cut off, emergency train lighting and ventilation came on. Lighting and ventilation in the tunnels remained switched on throughout. SMRT says it also activated a two-way bus bridging service at 7.33pm between Marina Bay and Bishan stations, and extended the service at 8.23pm to Ang Mo Kio station. SMRT also ran a dedicated one-way bus bridging service from Bishan to Ang Mo Kio stations to provide alternative transport to passengers. Average frequencies were five minutes. As at 11.40pm, 87 buses were deployed for bus bridging. SMRT says travel advisories were also issue...

Breakdown on North-South MRT Line 15-Dec-2011 News 5 Tonight
A second MRT disruption in two days - this time along the North-South Line, affecting thousands of evening peak-hour commuters. Train services along both directions of the North-South Line were affected from Marina Bay to Braddell stations on Thursday evening. Train services between Braddell and Marina Bay MRT stations are disrupted, said a SMRT statement. Passengers should take alternative modes of transport or the bus bridging service available between Bishan and Marina Bay MRT stations. Power rail problem caused the breakdown, said an SMRT spokesperson. Emergency services were spotted outside MRT stations, and peak-hour traffic was also affected, with traffic congestion reported on Orchard Road between Dhoby Gaut and City Hall MRT stations. Channel NewsAsia understands that limited services for SMRTs southbound line resumed later in the night. Passengers described scenes of confusion, as they tried to make sense of the situation. Channel NewsAsia viewer Nizam Rahim sent in a picture of his wife walking on the track in the tunnel at the Dhoby Gaut station. One commuter, Adam, said he and hundreds of passengers were stuck on the train travelling from Somerset to Orchard. The electricity appeared to have been cut off, as the train was in total darkness. Jogger attacked by 9 stray dogs at Punggol
A jogger was attacked by a pack of nine stray dogs at a park in Punggol on Wednesday night. The park was only recently developed, and animal experts said the dogs might have been trying to protect their territory. It was a routine jog gone wrong and 20-year-old student Alicia Tay is perhaps lucky to escape with just scratches and bites. Ms Tay said she usually runs around the neighbourhood, but decided to check out the new Waterway park. She told Channel NewsAsia, she slowed to a brisk walk when she saw the dogs. But they followed her and started to claw at her legs. When one bit her ankle, she screamed and that managed to scare the dogs away. She later went to a nearby clinic where she got a tetanus jab. Ms Tay said a father-and-daughter pair who went to her aid, had earlier jogged past the dogs without any incident. She said I couldnt stop. I was afraid they would pounce on me if I stopped, so I just brisk-walked. I hoped that maybe if I continued walking, I may meet people in front. But it looked very deserted. So I thought maybe if I left them alone, maybe if I dont give them any attention they would leave me alone as well. But apparently thats not the case. I feel that probably they felt my fear, they could sense my fear that I was really scared of them, because I was intimidated by them. To add on to that, I was alone. Animal welfare group Action for Singapore Dogs said the pack was most likely abandoned by co...
