Dee Rees, is a talented writer and filmmaker whose directorial debut, Pariah, began as an award-winning short in 2007 that has transformed into a feature length film in 2011/2012. A crowd favorite at Sundance in 2011, the cinematographer, Bradford Young, was honored with the [US Dramatic Competition] Excellence in Cinematography Award for his brilliant work on the project. The cast features a number of outstanding newcomers. Two in point, are Adepero Oduye who portrays Alike (pronounced ah-lee-kay) and Pernell Williams as her best friend, Laura. Kim Wayans, known mainly for her body of work as a comedian on the 90′s tv series, "In Living Color," gives a moving performance here as Alike's rigid, conservative mother. Other in the casts include Aasha Davis, Charles Parnell and Sahra Mellesse. Shot in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, New York, and semi-autobiographical, Pariah follows the journey of Alike, a 17-year-old African American teenager who comes of age and to terms with whom she wants to be free to be. This amateur footage was shot by me, Jeff Winner, while Stan Warnow (Raymond Scott's son) and I interviewed movie music maestro John Williams at the Tanglewood estate and music venue in Lenox and Stockbridge, Massachusetts, on August 4th of 2008. Some of Stan's footage was used in the new feature-length, award-winning documentary film, "DECONSTRUCTING DAD" (ScottDoc.com), but this segment has never been seen before. From Wiki John Williams was born on February 8, 1932 in Long Island, New York, the son of Esther and John Williams, Sr. His father was a jazz percussionist who played with the Raymond Scott Quintette. John Towner Williams is an American composer, conductor, and pianist. In a career spanning almost six decades, he has composed some of the most recognizable film scores in the history of motion pictures, including the Star Wars saga, Jaws, Superman, the Indiana Jones films, ET the Extra-Terrestrial, Hook, Jurassic Park, Schindler's List, Home Alone and the first three Harry Potter films. He has had a long association with director Steven Spielberg, composing the music for all but two of Spielberg's major feature films. In this week's videolog I talk about my experience at the 27th annual Santa Barbara International Film Festival. This year, the fifth year I've taken part in the festival, I had my short film "Silent Heart" playing in the local section as a short. I BLAME the audio on Sash Feldman. As always, the festival was great and I got to see everyone from industry directors and best picture producers to Scorsese and the cast from "The Artist". This year, the first year I haven't had school, I fully took advantage of my freedom. I saw "West of Memphis" and incredibly powerful and tragic story of three teenagers wrongly accused of the murder of three children. Two of the people and a step father to one of the sons was there to answer questions. I also saw "The Other Dream Team" another documentary this time on Lithuanian independence and how a handful of basketball players from that country led the fight for independence. I saw "Samsara", an amazing film that could best be described as Planet Earth for humans. Shot in 70 mm and countries around the world it was absolutely gorgeous and powerful as well. I also saw "The Artist" finally which was a great movie. It had some amazing performances and deservedly is nominated for multiple Oscars. The closing film was "Where do we go now?" which was an awesome film about a peaceful village that's peace comes under threat due to violence surrounding it.
