Saving Home Garden Seeds
The art of saving seed has been practiced by Gardeners long before there were commercial seed producers. In fact, most of the vegetables and flowers we have today owe their existence to the fact that these early Gardeners, with an eye for quality, saved the seed of their best plants, sowed them the next year, and in this way improved the species. Nearly all corn varieties are hybrid. Other vegetables may be. To be sure, check the package to see if it says F1 hybrid. F2 plants are not hybrids and lend themselves to seed savings. Harvesting Seed Seed is extracted from fruit after it ripens and before it rots. Leave summer squash and cucumbers on the vine until after frost, just like winter squash and pumpkin. Separate the seed from its pulp and dry at room temperature. Leave pod Crops on the vine until the pod dries. Harvest before the seed is dispersed. Similarly, harvest seed heads after they dry but before dispersal. Storage Once the seed is dried, gently hand rub to rid it of any chaff, then store in an envelope in a cool, dry, rodent-free place. The seed will germinate best the following year.

2011 Garden Part 7
Spring has finally arrived. All of my plants were starting to look pretty stressed and Ive been pulling flowers off of them for the past two weeks C. annuums especially and now Im dealing with leaf roll, so Im taking a risk and putting them out early, they might have to deal with a couple nights in the 40s, but I dont think well see another freeze this year. I put my favorites in containers so I can bring them inside overnight incase I encounter the worst case scenario.

Im getting things prepped in the garden, and if weather abides this time next month Ill have peppers and tomatoes going in the ground. Check out how big the peppers are at the end of the video. Bhut Jolokias and Habaneros have their own grow light now and the tomatoes and C. annuum cultivars are under two new grow lights.

Rose hips and rose garden panorama
My Rose Blog www.mikesroses-salem.blogspot.com This video begins with a look at rose hips currently ripening on a hybrid tea rose named Voodoo -- to produce the hips, the rose was open pollinated. Here in the Pacific Northwest the garden is in Salem, Oregon, rose hips need to ripen from early summer to very late fall to get viable seeds. The video continues with a view of the rose garden. Three pink flamingos have been staged in front of three Queen Elizabeth grandiflora roses. All of the other rose bushes 59 of them in this large bed were grown from seeds -- some from Voodoo, some from Queen Elizabeth, and some from German roses see video entitled German rose seedlings along driveway. As of today 10/03/2010 all of the seedling bushes are less than 3 years old. The birthday of the earliest was 1/23/2008 and the most recent was 4/16/2010. New York Rose Garden Looks to Pesticide-Free Future
The New York Botanical Rose Garden is developing unique hybrid roses that will bloom all summer long. And best of all, the flowers dont need pesticides. The New York Botanical Rose Garden wants to stop spraying pesticides on its flowers by developing disease-resistant hybrids. Currently, 53 percent of the flowers in the garden are pesticide free. [Peter Kukielski, Curator, New York Botanical Rose Garden] Today we can say that we have 3675 plants and essentially half of those are genetically and specifically hybridized to be disease resistant, therefore we are not going to spray them. Roses were once genetically designed to resist disease, but gardeners who crossed genetics to create new ones altered the plants resistance. To maintain the new hybrids, chemicals were created to prevent disease and deterioration. [Peter Kukielski, Curator, New York Botanical Rose Garden] When this garden opened in 1988, it was a collection of roses. It was a collection of roses that were available at the time. I have to say with that and the definition of that is that roses at that time were generally known to be chemically-dependant plants. But in 2007, curator Peter Kukielski began to overhaul the entire collection, selecting unique rose hybrids that were created to exist in natural elements. The Apricot Mother of Pearl and Solero Yellow hybrids are among the most successful. [Peter Kukielski, Curator, New York Botanical Rose Garden] ...
