Canadas Mossiest Rainforest aka Fangorn Forest
Please SIGN our PETITION at www.AncientForestPetition.com This is the unprotected Mossy Maple Grove, Canadas mossiest rainforest, a stand of enormous old-growth Bigleaf maple trees -- some as much as 2 meters 7 feet wide in trunk diameter -- completely draped in hanging gardens of mosses and ferns found just south of Cowichan Lake on southern Vancouver Island, BC. This is in the traditional territory of Cowichan Tribes who are part of the Hulquminum Treaty Group. Unlike other spotlighted old-growth forests in BC that have all been coniferous or needle-leaf trees Douglas firs, Sitka spruce, western redcedars, etc., this is an old-growth deciduous or broad-leaf rainforest. This area has also been nicknamed Fangorn Forest after the forest in The Lord of the Rings. Bonsai - Deciduous Conifers
The Dawn Redwood, Larch, Bald Cypress, and Pond Cypress are members of the deciduous conifer family. They make very good material for bonsai trees because some grow very fast, some have excellent bark, and all produce uniquely shaped and colored foliage.

November gardening tips
November in the garden means pruning and training deciduous trees, mulching bare vegetable areas to protect them from winter cold, lifting tender bulbs to plant inside before the frost catches them, and digging out any remaining beetroots, potatoes or carrots before the frost gets them. It is also a good time to collect dried seed heads and cones to decorate the house, and plant paper-whites for scented table centres. For more gardening inspiration go to www.co-operative.coop

The Judas Tree Cercis siliquastrum
Heres our pretty Judas Tree Cercis siliquastrum. First filmed in spring, and some weeks later--today--when its now more leafy and covered in beans. Wikipedia says, There is a longstanding myth that Judas Iscariot hanged himself from a tree of this species. This belief is related to the common name Judas Tree which is possibly a corrupted derivation from the French common name, Arbre de Jud ée meaning tree of Judea, referring to a region where the tree occurs. So thats an interesting piece of information. These small deciduous trees are tough and pretty ornamentals, and useful in dry climate gardens like mine. Very drought-tolerant, once established, and a lovely purply-pinkish flow er display. Nice delicate fragrance from the blooms. .....

Figs
Fig trees are surprisingly easy to grow, and the fruit is delicious. These water-wise deciduous trees can be grown in milder climates in the ground, but do quite well in containers.

My Osage Orange Tree
Here I was, on Sunday, 31st October, 2010, looking at the lovely spring foliage of my Osage Orange tree. The botanical Latin for it is Maclura pomifera. This is a great deciduous drought-resistant tree, although I have noticed it does tend to become a bit of a weed around rivers and creeks. Like cactus, it was once a very important living fence--before barbed wire was invented. It does have quite a few thorns that have to be watched out for. This thorny tree is appreciated by birds who want a peaceful and safe roost that cats will avoid. The orange wood is used for woodturning. The roots are orange, too, and yield an orange dye. I recall the Osage Indians used the wood to make either bows or arrows. I cant remember which, at present. I suppose they used the dye for fabrics and things, too--like to make those colourful and attractive Indian blankets with. The leaves can be used as food for silkworms when mulberry leaves are in short supply. Osage Orange trees are related to other milky species like mulberry, figs, and breadfruit. Great, shapely, leafy and shady tree. Pity the fruits are inedible. Maybe all the latex in the large fruits could be used to make rubber--as has been done with dandelion milk? .....

Tree Problems
Had to have a Black Locust tree taken down after a storm. The tree guy didnt tell me to kill the stump before removing it. The result is baby trees all along the root lines and a pain in the butt. I understand this happens with most deciduous trees. Lilly is my pitt.
