How to Landscape With Ground Cover Plants
Hi, Im David with Smartscapes, LLC here in Nashville, Tennessee, and Im here to talk to you today about ground covers. Ground covers they have a huge application in your landscape. Most people kind of ignore it. They dont really feel like its that important. But take for example the front of this house. The front of this house we have a low border going up to the front porch. We dont want just bare bed space there so we used some English ivy to fill in the gaps. We wanted something to stay small, cover it, give an interest, give texture. And it does that job perfectly. In front of that youll see where we have some juniper. And its more of a spreader type juniper and it would be considered a ground cover as well. Now it gets a little bit higher but we, it also drops over here as well so we have room for the juniper to grow in. And it kind of gives, kind of gives a foundation planning effect on this low area and adds that interest that we desire. Now, ground covers, they have more than just that application. They do a world of things. We often use ground covers to stabilize hillsides. We use ground covers to accent a wooded area, in front of a wooded landscape. Give that border a definition in between the yard. A lot of people overlook ground covers but ground covers can be a very important part of your landscape. How to Landscape With Small Plants
Hi, Im David with Smartscapes, LLC here in Nashville, Tennessee. Im here today to talk to you about small plants in your landscape. Ironically enough thats one of my favorite parts to landscape. It can really make a huge impact. Take for example your annuals. Its early spring here in middle Tennessee right now and so we still have our pansies out. But they always produce such vibrant color in the spots that we need them. Also you have your container gardens full of herbs and we just planted a tomato in there this morning. Well put a tomato cage on it. And those are great for cooking and kids playing with them and whatever else. Also over here in small plants youll see that we have some mondo grass over here and some dianthus. Some perennials that ground cover and perennials that make a great look to our small planting area. Ill show you a couple more examples. Heres an example of small plants that my kids love. We have strawberries, and we have mint, and theres some blackberries and grapes planted back yonder. And were again were in the early spring in middle Tennessee but man when this stuff starts coming up my kids just love to come out here. Chew on mint leaves, pick their strawberries, pick their blueberries. And the grapes are just starting we are going to have to put a rack up for it to grow on. But this is a, this is another great example of how much small plants can help out your landscape. So when you are e...

Cotinus coggygria Royal Purple, Smoke Bush.m4v
A deciduous medium to large shrub with deep wine red leaves and pink fluffy inflorescens in summer which become seed leads in autumn. The leaves of this variety are almost transparent with the sun behind them. It has good autumn colour. If it is hard pruned in spring the leaves wiill be larger and the new growths a strong wine red, it will enable the shrub to be used for the leaf colour without becomming too large. The benefits of larger leaves and more dramatic stems will be at the loss of the inflorescens. Likes rich deep soil and a sunny position.

Landscaping Ideas for Privacy
Hi, Im David with Smartscapes, LLC here in Nashville, Tennessee. Im here to talk to you about how to landscape with privacy screens. What is worse than sunbathing on your patio and then your neighbor pops up? Cant think of anything else. So, what were going to show you is how to get your hairy neighbors from looking at your patio. Behind me youll find where the homeowner got smart and asked the neighbor if they could landscape their property so we installed a berm for them and then we also did some Viburnum and some evergreen trees and some rocks and some ornamental grasses. Now, over the course of the past few years since it was installed, it has grown up huge, everything was planted in about waist tall and now its pushing five, six feet. So, they cant see from their patio or their bedrooms what were doing over here and that makes it nice. Ill show you a couple other examples. Over here, youll find the same type of issue, bedrooms over there, patio over there. Nobody wants to see each other at inappropriate times so again we came up with a berm but this time we kind of built it for shade and did shade loving plants or shade tolerant plants in there. Youll find some Sea Green Juniper and some Nellie Stevens Hollies and some, whatever else, but the main idea is to get those nosy neighbors out of your face and not have to do it with a fence. How to Landscape Flowering Bushes
Hi, Im David with Smartscapes, LLC in Nashville, Tennessee, and Im here to talk to you about flowering bushes. Everybody needs to have flowering bushes in their yard and they do a great job at adding interest in the right places. For example, one of my favorites Im standing in front of or behind them right now are Knockout Roses. These dudes, theyll come up, theyll bloom from the end of April almost up into Thanksgiving. They look great, stay full of blooms and it provides interest in the area that we want it. When we design a landscape, usually we want to bring the persons eye to the house and have a welcoming effect and by flanking this area over here with basically a hedgerow or a mass planting of Knockout Roses, we achieve that goal. As they come out theyll fill out in blooms and it draws a persons eye straight to the house. It has a super welcoming effect. Now theres other areas that you can use flowering bushes as well and Ill give you some more examples. Here we have a great example of a privacy screen that has a flowering bush in it. Its Prague Viburnum and in the Spring it comes out with these beautiful kind of pinkish blooms and they turn white as they blossom out. It provides great Spring interest and thats kind of what you want in your landscape. You want a constant year round interest. So when youre designing for your landscape for year round you want to pick a variety of different flowering bushes th...
