www.learninghydro Making a plastic tube for vermicomposting requires only a 25 handsaw and a blade. And a Sharpie marker. Gloves for safety. Total tool expense, perhaps 35. The plastic trash cans came from the trash. The rolling trash can had lost its wheels. The other bins had cracked. When I cut the base unit, I left a rim of plastic to hold the shape. The galvanized steel trash can lid came from the street. As an experiment, I did not use vermicomposting on the trash shown. For a year, I dropped oranges, leaves, weeds, wind-blown papers, and a dead squirrel in a compost tube. The oranges and dead squirrel decayed to nothing. But without a moist environment, worms did not flourish in the stack. Dry composting fails. Look at the other videos of worm composting to see the difference between dry composting and sealed, moist tubes loaded with worms and insects. Wet composting vermicoposting will reduce green mass at a ratio of 50 to 100 to 1. I repeat that --- if a gardener limits the input of green mass to fruit, lawn cuttings, weeds without dirt, leaves, the gardener can fill the container many, many times -- perhaps 50 to100 times the volume of the tube before the tube requires dumping. However, garden raking usually commingles dirt and sticks with the green mass. Eventually, the dirt and sticks will fill the tube. Also, sticks make voids --- and ants and black widows will live in the voids. Chop and mulch all sticks before...
