Dee Rees, is a talented writer and filmmaker whose directorial debut, Pariah, began as an award-winning short in 2007 that has transformed into a feature length film in 2011/2012. A crowd favorite at Sundance in 2011, the cinematographer, Bradford Young, was honored with the [US Dramatic Competition] Excellence in Cinematography Award for his brilliant work on the project. The cast features a number of outstanding newcomers. Two in point, are Adepero Oduye who portrays Alike (pronounced ah-lee-kay) and Pernell Williams as her best friend, Laura. Kim Wayans, known mainly for her body of work as a comedian on the 90′s tv series, "In Living Color," gives a moving performance here as Alike's rigid, conservative mother. Other in the casts include Aasha Davis, Charles Parnell and Sahra Mellesse. Shot in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, New York, and semi-autobiographical, Pariah follows the journey of Alike, a 17-year-old African American teenager who comes of age and to terms with whom she wants to be free to be. Spike Lee is an executive producer.
