Battlezone and Robot Tank Atari 2600
This is a gameplay video of me playing two Atari 2600 tank simulation games, Battlezone and Robot Tank. Battlezone was originally an arcade game before being ported to the Atari 2600. Thus, it was intended to be very action oriented and had excellent graphics. In fact, the graphics were so detailed, the US military purchased a modified version of the game that they used for training simulations. Battlezone is considered to be the first true virtual reality game. One of Activisions first games, Robot Tank was released in 1983, and a direct port to the Atari 2600. It lacked the graphical appeal of Battlezone but made up for it in gameplay. It had numerous simulation elements including day, night, fog and mountain settings. If the tank was hit by an enemy missile, parts of the tank such as the radar and sights would become damaged or unusable, rather than the entire tank being destroyed. Robot Tank also had a interior view rather than Battlezones third person view. I consider Robot Tank to be superior due to its complexity and difficulty. Battlezone becomes a click-and-shoot once you learn turning strategies. Robot Tank is more difficult due to the obstruction caused by night and fog. The basic strategies still remain, however; Strafe, shoot and keep moving. Emulator used was Stella emulator and video recorded with Hypercam 2.

Virtual reality game-based technology can be used effectively to improve motor skill rehabilitation of a range of functional deficits. Our design approach focuses on the creation of flexible VR systems/tools that could address both assessment and training tasks in a more comprehensive fashion than is currently available within the clinic and home settings. Integrating the newest consumer-ready technologies, the Motor Rehab Lab at the University of Southern California Institute for Creative Technologies explores and promotes the creation of home-based rehabilitation and exergame applications that do not require the user to hold an interface device or move on a pad as the source of interaction within the game. Instead, the users body is the game controller operating in 3D space, and multiple users can be tracked in this fashion for both cooperative and competitive interactive activities.
