Renaissance Dance Tune HUITIESME BRANLE DE BOURGONGNE by Adrian Le Roy
Adrian Le Roy 1520-1598 was an influential French music publisher, lutenist, guitarist, composer and music educator. Le Roy was born in the town of Montreuil-sur-Mer in northern France to a wealthy family. Very little is actually known about his formative years but he was probably a chorister and studied the lute, guita] and cittern with various teachers. He became an accomplished musician and entered the service of, first, Claude de Clermont, then, Jacques II Baron de Semblan çay and Viscount of Tours, both members of the aristocracy who had influence at court. In 1546 he met the publisher Jean de Brouilly in Paris and married his daughter Denise de Brouilly.

The Night Watch playing for a history day in an English castle. The branle de lOfficial is recorded in Thoinot Arbeaus Orch ésographie, a compendium of popular French dance and dance music, first published in 1589. Bransle de la Torche - Hampshire Guitar Orchestra
This piece, by Praetorius born 1571, is a fast and furious piece - the bransle also spelled branle or brantle having once been described as a lascivious swaying dance. Not that anyone has actually danced to this piece in any of our concerts, but we remain hopeful that we might have some lascivious swaying at some time in the future... This piece, also known as the candlestick bransle or candlestick dance, has some glorious harmonies - this arrangement by our musical Director Derek Hasted is in 6 parts. HAGO play four sizes of guitar - thats what makes as a guitar orchestra, rather than a guitar ensemble; the altos, in the front right of the picture are tuned 5 notes up from an ordinary guitar in the left of the picture. Behind the altos are a bass and two contras, which provide the deep notes you can hear under the piece, and which give a guitar orchestra its special sound. HAGO is always looking for like-minded players to come and join us - we play music in all styles, and most of our concerts are for charity. Visit the Hampshire Guitar Orchestra website at www.hago.org.uk to find out more Thanks for Sasha Levtov from West Sussex Guitar Club at Bognor Regis for the video footage Find more guitar orchestra videos, visit our YouTube channel at http Find us on Facebook too, at www.facebook.com

Cassandra Branle
The Mixed Branle Cassandra, as performed using art from Arbeaus Orchesography. The video is intended to be silly, but the steps are genuine and could possibly give an idea of how to perform this dance as described. The music was performed poorly by myself on a cittern one evening when I was too lazy to find my plectrum. This video is copyright free.
